Your faucet of creativity
You have heard that creativity can't be turned on like a faucet so many times but what people don't realize is that creativity can't be turned off life a faucet either. So what happens is, if you are in a profession that is classified as "creative", you will get people who will try to turn on the faucet of your creativity and when that doesn't work, they will try to turn it on using taunts you. The conversation can go something like this
“Hey Man! Wassup!!!”
“Nothing much, how are you?”
“Good man. Achha listen man, I need a headline for a slide I am preparing for my boss's presentation about Cloud computing. The slide talks about the current landscape.”
“OK, let me think about it. I'll get back to you by lunch.”
“Are nahin yaar, itna time nahin hai! I need something quick, something like yesterday.”
“Come on man, I don't have a repository of headlines from where I can pick and give you something.”
“Kyaa yaaar! Tu to itna creative hai, this is such a simple thing for you. Can't you come up with something now?”
Eventually the faucet starts flowing and when it flows, it floods. After understanding the context, you come up with ideas and like any creative professionals your ideas are not just the headline you were asked to write, you have ideas about the whole presentation but unfortunately they are not required as they may mean a lot of work for the "uncreative" person who came to you for a headline. They same people who were so eager to turn on the faucet are the equally eager to turn it off.
The bottom line is that the next time someone comes to fill up his glass from your creativity faucet, ask them to get a barrel.
