In 1886 in Haymarket Massacre in Chicago, an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at police as they dispersed a public meeting. The police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight hour workday, resulting in several dead demonstrators and police officers. May Day is the anniversary of that Chicago protest. The irony is that while the whle world remembers this day for something that happend today in US, the US chose to ignore today and celebrate Labour Day in September because US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the riots.
