Ganpati and Coconut

A coconut is an essential element of any puja or hawan. It is offered during worship. Coconuts are often used to initiate the beginning of any new activity, like opening a new office, buying a new car. A coconut is broken on the ground and its water sprinkled to seek the blessings of the gods and successful completion of the any undertaking.

During the Ganpati festival as well, one coconut is kept in a kalash or a pot which traditionally is made of brass or copper but now-a-days stainless steel is also accepted. After the visarjan of Ganpati, this coconut is broken and distributed as "prasad".
