I have beaten Ferrari. Now What? - The history of Ford GT40 III

17th December 2008

So Henry Ford the second had made an enemy and decided to get even with him. He couldn't beat Ferrari on his own so he started looking for partners and finally tied up with Lola. What a name for a car. Anyway Lola was already using a Ford engine for one of their car. They made a mid-engined car and started racing it in 1964. In 1966, Ford managed to achieve what they set out to do. They won the first three positions in Le Mans. They won it but not without controversies and disappointing their driver Ken Miles who eventually died while driving another Ford a couple of months later. Ford won the event four years in a row and after beating Ferrari, I guess they lost interest and never won the race after that. I am not a race buff so I won't know if a car using their engine had won the event. Around the same time Ford did quite well in the Formula 1 as well by winning 12 times in 15 years from a period of 1968 to 1982 with Ferrari winning on the other three occasions. I guess in the recent years Ford made an attempt again with Jaguar but failed to impress. Now that Jaguar is owned by Ratan Tata, I am wondering if he will follow Vijay Mallya and get into Formula 1 racing as well.
