Dollar, pound, Yen, euro all have a symbol for currency but the India Rupee is represented as Rs. or Re depending on the amount. The Reserve Bank of India has announced a competition for designing a symbol for Indian currency with a prize of Rs 250,000 and the winner will have to surrender the copyright so there is no conflict at a later stage.
What's in a name? That which we call a rose... the rose will remain a rose and if you are talking about a currency, it is infinitely more powerful than a rose so I believe it doesn't matter if you have a symbol for it or not, a picture of Gandhi or not, the indian currency will remain powerful. I believe it is the currency that gives an identity to a symbol and not the other way round. Yeh Rupiye kisi symbol ke mohtaj nahin hain.
That being said, it will be a good idea to have a key on your keyboard that you can press whenever you want to write the Indian currency and not get a spelling error in programs like word.
