16th December 2013

Happy Vijay Diwas

Today the entire media is reminding us of the unfortunate events of 16th December an year ago in New Delhi. While it is important to remember what happened on this day one year ago, lets also not forget what happened today 42 years ago.

Today is Vijay Diwas - the day that marks our victory over Pakistan in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. On this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Aabdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered to the Indian Army led by General Jagjit Singh Aurora, in the Ramna Race Course, now Suhrawardy Udyan, in Dhaka after their defeat in the war.

It is a day that fills every Indian with pride and sorrow. Pride for winning the war and sorrow for losing the soldiers and officers lost in doing so.
